3D Printing

3D Printing is revolutionising manufacturing in many ways, there will come a time when almost everything is made using 3D printing or processes that evolve from what 3D printing is today. We can already 3D print with a range of different materials, many types of thermos plastics, metals, waxes and resins. While 3D printing still does have some limitations, it does not have the same tooling limitations that traditional CNC machines have, allowing for more complex designs that in some cases are not even possible to manufacture in any other way.

Pros and Cons of 3D printing

While it is an amazing new emerging technology there are still some things to consider. 3D Printing can be slow, this is ok for short runs and one offs, but try to compete with mass manufacture, 3D printing is still quite expensive. Plastic 3D printed parts are not as strong as their injection moulded counterparts, strong thermoplastics like Nylon and polycarbonate can be 3D printed but these have their limits. For some projects though these short comings are not an issue and 3D printing is an ideal method of production, especially for prototyping.

What do you need to get started with 3d Printing?

A 3D CAD model of course. All 3D printing is done layer by layer, so the first step is to slice your 3D model into layers from which a tool path can be generated for the 3D printer.
